Most people think that in order to get that V shaped upper body like comic book super heroes, they only have to develop big broad back muscles and lats. Well, by having broad back muscles and well developed lats is only part of the equation to get a V shape upper body. For complete V shape upper body development, you will also need to build a powerful chest, big strong shoulder muscles or commonly called deltoids or delts for short and a slim waist.

We shall discuss how to build big shoulder muscles in this article. You see, you may have a wonderful six pack abs or well defined chest muscles, but when you are in your street clothes, no one can see them. But if you have that massive V shape with bulging shoulder muscles, your body frame will tell the world that under those clothes is a well defined body of a gym warrior.

As with building any muscles in your body, intensity is the key to building big deltoids. Your shoulder muscles are made up primarily of the anterior deltoid (front delt), medial deltoid (middle delt) and posterior deltoid (back delt). All 3 parts of your shoulder muscles must be targeted to build well defined and big strong deltoids that threaten to burst through your shirt. The problem here is that most people do not know that they must work on all 3 shoulder muscles and do most shoulder workouts by just concentrating on the anterior delts with exercises such as military press. Furthermore, working only on anterior delts could lead to over training your shoulder muscles because many other exercises like the bench press, dips and push ups also recruit shoulder muscles for its movements.

Your should be careful when working on your shoulder muscle exercises as your shoulders joints are very susceptible to injuries and therefore proper form in executing the exercises is crucial. Don’t let bad exercise form cause you injuries that may be permanent and put you out of the gym forever. One common injury prone exercise is the narrow grip upright row. Although this is a great trapezius and shoulder muscle exercise, it should be avoided because this exercise invokes unnatural and awkward shoulder joint movement.

So what exercises are good for building big strong deltoids? Well, besides the military presses, try Arnold Press, Lateral Raise, Bent Over Lateral Raises, Shoulder Width Upright Row and Shoulder Cable exercises. Ask your personal trainer or read up on how to perform these exercises in excellent form for great shoulder muscle development.

Remember that you must also develop other aspects such as a big broad chest, wide back muscles and flared lats as well as a slim waistline to get that much coveted V shaped upper body.

If you want to get the best results from all your hard work in the gym, then you should put all your energy into these 2 exercises. These exercises are so effective because…

- They stimulate more than one muscle to work. (many times 3 or more major muscles are working during these exercises)

- They enable us to lift more weight

- They are the best upper body exercises to stimulate the muscle building hormones Testosterone and Growth Hormone.

- They cause us to work a lot harder and therefore burn more calories

- And they speed up our metabolism faster than any other exercise

There is a reason why these 2 exercises work so well. They are hard work!

So if you actually to go to the gym to train hard and get results, unlike others who would rather chat, flex and check out the opposite sex, then add these 2 exercises to your training arsenal.

PARALLEL BAR DIPS

This pushing exercise is the most efficient way to gain size and strength in the chest, shoulders and triceps. It is far superior to the bench press because you’re moving your body through space. The extra stability required in this exercise recruits a lot more muscles to come into play to assist in the movement. It is also a lot more functional, and trains the body as it was meant to work, as one collective machine.

Simply place your hands at about shoulder width. With a slight lean forward, lower your body until your arms form a 90 degree angle. Explode back to the top position. Your elbows should stay by your sides at all times. Don’t let them flare out.

CHIN UPS

I know you might dread doing these, but that’s why they are so good. Chin ups are the absolute best way to develop large biceps, and that wide lat spread that creates that desirable V shape. They are superior to exercises such as lat pulldown or rows because they cause us to move our body through space, against gravity.

The difficulty of chin ups brings many muscles into play, including our stabilizer muscles to help complete the lift. I often get sore abs after a heavy chin up workout!

To start, grab the chin up bar a bit closer than shoulder width apart, with your palms facing you. Lift all the way up to your collarbone and lower all the way until you are fully stretched. You should be really close to the bar, almost grazing your nose on the way up.

Maintain good posture throughout by keeping your shoulder blades pulled back, almost touching each other and also remember to keep your bum sticking out and your abs tight to support your back.

Collectively, these 2 exercises train every muscle in your upper body. There is no need to do any more exercises.

So if you want to get the most out of your time spent in the gym, use up all of your energy on dips and chin ups. Don’t waste your limited supply of energy on exercises that simply cannot deliver the benefits that these two exercises can.

The sight of well-built and even wide shoulders on men and women imparts an impression of strength and even confidence. It actually is one of the parts of our upper body that we want to build and strengthen, and fortunately, there are many ways to do that.

The shoulder is actually made up to three deltoids or muscles: the front, middle and the back. Fortunately, each of the three heads are involved in many of the compound weight lifting or bodybuilding exercises:

* Benchpress works the front deltoid aside from the pectoral (chest) muscles

* Closegrip benchpress also works the front deltoids, aside from the chest and triceps

* Overhead shoulder press targeted primarily to build and strengthen the triceps and middle deltoids

* Bentover rows primarily performed to build the back muscles (lassitimus dorsi) and works out the rear deltoids

If you have a program that has the following exercises, there may be no need to do additional exercises for the shoulder, as this can lead to overtraining of that bodypart, and even injury to the shoulder joint. In fact, the shoulder joint also takes a lot of stress and beating when exercises like the deadlift are performed (especially with heavy poundages).

When doing the compound exercises, all the muscles of the shoulders are actually getting stimulated, albeit in varying degrees. For example, when doing the benchpress, the rear and middle deltoids also act as stabilizers. So it’s easy to understand how the deltoid can get overtrained.

However, there may be a need to build more shoulder mass and strength even if the compound exercises mentioned can give a good workout. That’s when we can go into specialization.

During the phase of specialization, a target muscle or group of muscles are targeted for a period ranging from 2 months to 6 months (depending on rate of progress or goals). During specialization, the progression of the poundages of other exercises affecting the part to be targeted are lightened, or the volume reduced. In the case of shoulders, lightening up or reducing the volume of work on the benchpress and bentover rows may be necessary.

The reason for this is not to tax too much a persons recuperative abilities, and to avoid overtraining of the body part from the performance of other exercises.

Shoulder specialization exercises that can be considered are:

* Front dumbbell raises – works more of the front deltoid

* Lateral raises works more of the middle deltoid

* Bent lateral raises works more of the rear deltoid

You can also include barbell presses in your specialization program, especially if mass and power are part of your goals.

If your workout is mostly composed of bodyweight exercises, the shoulder may need additional stimulus from lifting weights. Please take note, however, that bodyweight exercises like pushups also work the shoulder.

Since the shoulder muscles and the joint can be easily overtrained and stressed during exercise (especially during heavy weight training), care must be taken not to pull any muscle in the area or the joints.

While the shoulder joint is actually very sturdy (just watch how much weight strongmen can lift overhead), you can actually strain it easily by making light flicking (like shadow boxing) or jerking movements if it is not warmed up properly. Nonetheless, the shoulder joints will also give in if is it is subjected to too much stress (from heavy weights, for example).

So we cannot underestimate the need to warm up properly when working out your shoulders. Violent, jerky or flicking movements when warming up the shoulders are discouraged. Better to go slow first when warming up your shoulders.

If you feel any pain in the shoulder joint, better to stop those heavy workouts before things get worse. For sure, nobody wants to undergo an operation to repair that part.

Toning comes after everything in your fitness program is executed. Every session, as it’s always designed, ends with toning or cool down segment. This is when you try to relax your body and stretch some muscle groups that have been used in the cardio and strength training sessions. If cardio exercise is a fat burner and weight lifting is a muscle developer, then stretching is a muscle relaxant.

To relax your muscles during toning, you must bear to breathe in and out appropriately and stretch without straining your muscles. Soreness is normal at first few attempts but pain is quite threatening. Your workout routines may pain you if you don’t execute them in a manner that is suggested by the fitness veteran. Follow what the fitness gurus preach and do some reading. You can make use of these 3 upper body tonight routines for sure:

1.Shoulder Toning. You can tone your shoulders by shrugging or through rotator cuff exercise. Or you can stand in front of a post and face toward the right side. With your right leg striding forward and right forearm on the wall, you bring our shoulder at a 45-degree angle. This will enable your upper body to be off the wall. Hold it right there for 30 seconds before you can return to the initial pose and shift to the other side.

2.Abs Toning. The abdominal muscles may have been the most active muscles if you’re into six-pack abs program so you need to relax them after strenuous sessions. You spread your feet apart and bring your arms up right beyond your head. Your elbows are to be bent and your forearms must be held with your hands. Try to reach up using your left elbow. As you do this, bend a little to the right side. Hold this position for 30 seconds before returning to the initial position and repeating the routine but this time aiming the other side.

3.Back Exercise Toning. Your back must have been tired lifting those weights during your resistance training using dumbbells or barbells. So, all you need to do now is calm its muscles down by a little stretching using a simple back exercise toning. Lie on the floor with your body facing the roof. Have your hand placed beneath your head. Bring your feet and legs together as you bend your legs. At this time, your calves and thighs are supposed to be creating a right angle. Push your shoulders toward the ground while taking your knees over to the ground on the right side. Hold this stance for 20 to 30 seconds, and then return to your original lying position before repeating this routine using the other side.

These toning exercises are aimed to relax your upper body muscles. Do them with correct stretching limits, or you strain yourself.
