Navy Diver going for a personal record on a CrossFit workout called “Fran”. Fran is 21-15-9 reps of 95 lb thrusters and pull ups done continuously and for time. The lower the time, the better the score. Jeremy’s sponsored by Forged Clothing and a CrossFit Forged Team member, look for him at the ‘09 CrossFit Games! ForgedClothing.com

oh yeah u’ve climbed for 20 years, and how does that make you a pull ups expert, the fact of the matter is he’s not cheating himself on those pull ups, he’s using more muscle groups faster in a more athletic way, more work in less time = more power output
September 25th, 2009 at 5:15 am
no it is more athletic, the key to this move is hip extension, what is th key to any athletic move..hip extension, a football tackle the power comes from hip extension, throwing a base ball, kicking a soccer ball etc, the posterior chain is all of the muscles down the back and into the glutes and hams, and i dnt need u to tell me if im right or not, mark rippetoe, greg glassmas, and mike burgener all teach this and im guessing they’ve got u beat

Doesn’t make a pull-up expert, just a climbing expert. I’m not telling you whether you’re right or not. I see your point that doing something with a lot of muscle groups explosively can be considered “athletic” if you want to define it that way. Doesn’t mean it is more difficult or harder. Try having him do these pull ups very controlled and slow, just isolating lats and of course biceps and see if he does as many. “got u beat” in what way? “My daddy is bigger than yours”-style? Sure. Enjoy!

i think they should help him get a better time by placing the weights for thrusters at the ball so he can start immediately will save him some seconds

why would he want to isolate the biceps and lats, when he can use more muscle groups in a powerful movemtn, it is harder cardiovascularly speaking, and those guys i mentioned are fitness experts glassman founded crossfit, mark rippetoe is a world renowned powerlifting coach and mike burgener is probably the main authority on olympic weightlifting in america and they all believe in kipping pull ups

Those actually count as pullups?
Only in the Navy…..

looks very nice!
so what is this exercise exactly for?
is it to train muscle endurance?
can this exercise also be used to gain more muscle mass (the exercise with the barbell)? how should it be executed then?
thx in advance…

those pull ups are harder than they look, there is a very precise form to them, and once you have the form they are easier than regular pull ups, but not by much. in the time it takes to do 20 standard pull ups you could do 35 kipping pull ups, but they aren’t half is easy so the benefit out ways the ‘cheat’

Hey dip shit this is a crossfit workout, not part of the Navy. He just happens to be in the Navy. Until you’ve went through any Navy Special Ops training shut up.
October 11th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
This workout isn’t meant to just isolate lats and biceps.

Ipdking711 – because not everyone is willing to work hundreds of feet below sea level, and you need a lot of strenght and training to be able to make 6hr dives, and you need a lot training to become, well pretty much a diving expert, and some divers get detached to EOD teams (they are SpecOps) and attached to SEAL teams (they to are SpecOps). that that is why Divers are considered SpecOps

let me tell you, these are No joke! this is the new work out my uncle and i are doing. seriously i have yet to find a workout that whoops ur ass like these Frans do. its very high intensity work out, and those kipping pull ups are difficult… seriously go try it. start with 65lbs then move to 95lbs sets of 21, 15, 9 is the correct way. you’ll be sore in a whole new way!! I’m a cyclist, and used to pound out 350 mile ever week and this is more intense! promise!

Oh wow… You people must be on the wrong page as the guy in the workout… He isn’t doing dead hang pull-ups. AND HE ALMOST DEFINITELY DOES KNOW THAT! Go to the cross-fit website and read up no these exercises and they set guidelines for the required workout.
In Fran you are to do: 21 Pull-Ups (Kipping or Dead hang) 21 Thrusters, 15 Pull-Ups (Kipping or Dead hang) 15 Thrusters, 9 Pull-Ups (Kipping or Dead Hang) 9 thrusters.
You are to do these in succession and it is graded by time.

Other Cross-Fit exercises REQUIRE dead-hang pull-ups.

That is by far the most aggressive looking tattoo sleeve Ive ever seen.

Because can you sit in the ocean for 4-6hrs at a time while disposing of bombs and repairing ships. Trust me they aren’t considered ops for nothing.
November 21st, 2009 at 11:08 am
lol, hell no I couldn’t. I hate the water. I am sure it is tough but other branches have divers that do the same tasks just on a lesser scale. Didn’t know the Navy was so extreme about it.
November 21st, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Yeah the navy divers work with seals and do some crazy shit.
November 23rd, 2009 at 12:25 am
its for increased work capacity.
November 23rd, 2009 at 12:29 am
it has nothing to do with isolating the lats and biceps, its about doing the most work possible, and kipping pullups involve more power output than deadhang, plain and simple
